Geli Raubal, the daughter of Leo and Angela Raubal (Hitler's half-sister), was born in Linz, Austria on June 4, 1908. After Hitler was released from Landsberg Prison, he rented an Alpine residence in the mountains of Obersalzberg, Germany . He asked Angela, by then a widow, to be his housekeeper. She agreed, and in August 1928, Angela and Geli, who was by then a young woman of 20, went to live with Hitler in the country. Hitler became enamored of Geli. At first she welcomed her doting half-uncle's affections. However, as his admiration turned to obsession, Hitler controlled Geli's every move. She was forbidden to make any friends and was accompanied either by Hitler or one of his men at all time. Geli became despondent by her virtual imprisonment. Hitler's relationship with his niece became the subject of public gossip, but he staunchly denied rumors that they shared a romantic relationship. Geli was found dead on September 18, 1931, at the age of 23, in Hitler's Munich apartment. The exact circumstances surrounding her death remain speculative, though suicide is considered by many to have been likely. |
