Sophie Gerlich, whose maiden name was Sophie Stempfle, was a staunch supporter of her husband Karl Albert "Fritz" Gerlich and his fight against the Nazi Party, its precepts and specifically Hitler. In 1934, she struggled with German authorities to have her husband released when Hitler arrested him along with scores of other vocal opponents of Hitler and the Nazi regime. Fritz Gerlich was never formally charged with any crime, and was ostensibly held in "protective custody." Sophie received no official word of her husband's execution, save a small box which contained his blood-splattered glasses. |
