Emmy Award winner Alfre Woodard and Tony Award winner Frank Langella star in this story of enthusiastic schoolteacher Pat Conroy, who comes to a small island off the coast of South Carolina with the hope of bringing literacy and self-respect to the predominantly black, uneducated local children.

In the late 1960s, idealistic teacher Pat Conroy moves to Yamacraw Island in search of steady income to help pay for his upcoming wedding. After meeting his 12 mixed-grade students, he is shocked to find that most are illiterate and

can barely add. Going against the stern advice from the school's principal, Pat undertakes unconventional teaching methods to educate his students.

The children embrace his kind, spirited and, at times, silly manner and begin to thrive under his tutelage. His creative style, however, proves too unconventional for the school administration, and he learns that his job may be in jeopardy. But Pat has no intention of abandoning the students without a fight.
