Meet The Life-Saving Heroes Of Code Black

Dr. Leanne Rorish

Dr. Leanne Rorish

Leanne, the residency director of the Angels Memorial ER, is a force to be reckoned with. Known to her residents as "Daddy," she is an excellent, confident, quick-thinking doctor who is not afraid to make aggressive or unconventional decisions to save a patient. Leanne's inventive, "cowboy" techniques often bring her into conflict with fellow doctors, but her track record is solid and she never fails to impress. She is a natural teacher and leads by example, but respect from "Daddy" is hard won. She schools her residents with tough love, expects the best from those she believes in, and is ready to weed out any newbies who don’t exceed her expectations. A painful personal history fuels Leanne's need to be the best doctor she can be. While she thinks a doctor can (and should) separate emotion from the work, Leanne continually learns that may be easier said than done.
Christa Lorenson

Christa Lorenson

Christa is the oldest of the new residents in the Angels Memorial ER. A former soccer mom whose young son died of cancer, Christa became an expert on everything there was to learn about the disease. After her son's death and resulting failed marriage, Christa resolved to return to school and become a doctor. Christa's intuition and life experience serve her extremely well in her practice. Her dedication and follow-through are unprecedented. She is always going above and beyond to attend to her patients' emotional needs, as well as their medical ones. Sometimes she goes too far—which becomes a source of conflict with Leanne, who is constantly warning Christa to check her emotions at the door. But Christa can’t help it; she wears her heart on her sleeve. She feels a strong connection to Leanne, as she knows they share similarly painful pasts. In the Angels ER, Christa certainly learns from Leanne—but Christa senses (or at least hopes) that Leanne may be learning a little from her, too.
Dr. Neal Hudson

Dr. Neal Hudson

Neal is an attending ER doctor and highly skilled surgeon who likes to play by the rules. He is a former resident of Leanne's and, while he respects her deeply, he often disagrees with some of the risks she takes in the ER. That said, the two share a rich friendship and connection—and neither one can resist a medical adventure together. Neal is handsome, smart, and charming—the type of doctor mothers love to nab for their daughters. Neal's father is a renowned neurosurgeon who openly criticizes ER medicine as chaotic "manual labor," but Neal prides himself on carving his own way and becoming the doctor he wants to be. However, Neal can’t deny his love of surgery, which he'd specialized in during his own residency. The prospect of pursuing it more full-time continues to tempt him.
Jesse Sallander

Jesse Sallander

Jesse is a nurturing and affable—but no-nonsense—presence in the Angels Memorial ER. He's the "Mama" to Leanne’s "Daddy." As senior nurse, he oversees the new residents and takes his job very seriously. Jesse manages to keep an eye on everything unfolding in the ER and somehow knows where he's needed before he's even summoned. While Jesse can be humorous and playful, he doesn’t sugar coat anything and he's not afraid to administer a hefty dose of reality, if necessary. Jesse is a terrific nurse who has seen it all—and he is always ready with the perfect piece of advice to prepare the residents for their next challenge. Jesse is also Leanne’s best friend and the closest thing she has to family. Leanne would be the first to tell him that, at times, Jesse could really benefit from listening to his own great bits of advice.
Malaya Pineda

Malaya Pineda

Malaya is a doctor who needs proof. One of the new residents at Angels, she is a natural detective, synthesizing stats and uncovering hidden medical issues in play. Malaya's biggest challenge is acknowledging that the numbers don’t always tell the whole story—and that you don't always have time to run the tests in the first place. Naturally cool, calm, and collected, Malaya is highly ambitious, but never at the expense of others. Malaya feels at home at Angels because she did both her training and internship there. Because of this, she has a special relationship with senior nurse Jesse, who is always there to comfort or coach. Malaya is not afraid to stand up for what she believes is right, which can sometimes get her into trouble. At times she also struggles with bringing emotional baggage into the ER.
Angus Leighton

Angus Leighton

Angus, a new resident at Angels, is a former psychology major who remains passionate about understanding the intricacies of human behavior. Angus has terrific instincts but needs the confidence to trust those instincts. Approachable, loyal, and, at times, endearingly wet behind the ears, Angus invests in relationships both with his patients and with his fellow residents. Camaraderie is essential to Angus, and he slowly but surely ushers even the most difficult candidates (like Mario) into the family circle. Angus hails from a medical family—his brother is a superstar ER doctor and his father is on the board at Angels—but every day Angus works hard to be his own man.
Mario Savetti

Mario Savetti

Mario, a new resident in the Angels Memorial ER, has top-of-the-game medical skills, but could use a little help with his people skills. Italian-American, cocky, and devastatingly handsome, Mario grew up in a tough neighborhood and bootstrapped his way to becoming a doctor, working second jobs to pay for medical school. Mario has boundless energy and plays to win. Succeeding is the only option for Mario. But because he’s only ever relied on himself, Mario has a few lessons to learn about teamwork if he’s going to make it through the residency program (and make friends).
Dr. Rollie Guthrie

Dr. Rollie Guthrie

Guthrie is the longest-serving attending doctor in the Angels Memorial ER. He claims he’s been there since they were knocking out patients with bourbon. Warm, genuine, and reassuring, Guthrie is gifted when it comes to connecting with patients and doctors alike. He enjoys taking people under his wing, often guiding them with meaningful anecdotes that illuminate complicated situations. Above all, Guthrie is a man of faith. And when things get tough, he looks to his faith to guide him.
