Recognizing Hawaii Five-0's most resilient character

Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park) may live in paradise, but she's never had a simple island life. In fact, she's had to overcome some amazing challanges on her way to becoming one of the heroes of Hawaii Five-0. Let's take a moment to appreciate all that Kono's faced as one of the most resilient characters on television...
Sure, Kono may have had a few tough breaks, but she's proven that she's tough enough to overcome them.

Sure, Kono may have had a few tough breaks, but she's proven that she's tough enough to overcome them.

Fortunately, she has always had the support from her Hawaii Five-0 team to help her through these grueling moments.

Prior to joining the Hawaii Five-0 team, Kono was set to become a professional surfer and was recruited at age 15 by the CEO of Coral Prince Surfing, Ian Adams. After several years on the circuit, she blew out her knee during a tournament—marking the end of her pro career. Fortunately, while recovering, she made up her mind to take a new path in life and become a cop.

From the very start of the show, Kono didn't have it easy. In the very first episode, criminal Sang Min forced her to take her clothes during an undercover operation to prove she wasn't wearing a wire.

Before getting married to Adam, there was one family member who certainly didn't want Kono to join the Noshimuri. Adam's brother Michael framed Kono for the murder of Victor Asanuma in an attempt to break up the couple and strengthen the family's bond with Yakuza. To make matters worse, he attempted to kill Kono when things didn't go according to plan. That could sure make holiday get-togethers awkward!

Love can be complicated, especially when your boyfriend-turned-husband was part of an organized crime group. Kono has had to deal with Adam's former ties to the Yakuza numerous times, leading to her being attacked in Hangzhou, chased in Hong Kong, and shot by foot soldiers.

At the end of Season 2, Kono was kidnapped by Frank Delano—who forced Chin to choose between saving Kono or his wife. Chin chose his wife, leaving Kono to be thrown into the ocean bound and gagged. Fortunately, Adam came to her rescue.

During Season 2, Kono had to deal with an intense investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs after being attached to a bunch of dirty cops. She faced interrogation by her own team members and lost her badge before it was finally revealed that it was all an undercover operation.

While anyone's wedding day comes with some jitters and anxiety, Kono's came with an all-out meltdown... almost literally. Dressed and ready to walk down the aisle, Adam and Kono nearly missed their own nuptials when they had to deal with a last-minute nuclear threat.

If a nuclear bomb threat wasn't enough to ruin her wedding day, Kono's cousin Chin forgot the wedding rings and had to return to his car to retrieve them. While there, he was attacked by his former brother-in-law Gabriel, delaying the ceremony a little more.

It wouldn't be a proper honeymoon for Kono unless there was a little action, right? After barely making it down the aisle, Adam and Kono's newlywed bliss was short lived after being interrupted on their romantic getaway by a masked intruder. The incident ended with a shoot-out at a bank and Adam in the hospital from a gunshot wound.
