The episode drew inspiration from the movie Sin Nombre, which depicts the hardships of people trying to immigrate from Honduras to the United States.

The circumstances in the episode reflect the real New Orleans, as it has a thriving Honduran community—one of the largest in the United States.

Victor Ortega is played by guest star Max Arcienega, who was in Breaking Bad, where he played a gangster named Krazy-8. His guest-starring role on NCIS: New Orleans is a much different part for Max, but he's great in both.

The actual U.S. Coast Guard helped out enormously with a critical scene in the episode, even providing a boat.

The song "Missing Heart" by Dwight Yoakam was used in the episode because it's a beautiful, bittersweet song that encapsulated the feeling of the scene.

Daryl "Chill" Mitchell (not pictured) actually used to be a hip hop artist.
