For years, Gibbs struggled to deal with the death of his wife, Shannon, and his daughter, Kelly. In "Personal Day," he took his first steps toward healing. 

It started when DEA Agent Luis Mitchell wanted to scatter his dad's ashes over the Pacific Ocean and asked Gibbs to accompany him. Luis' father, Kurt Mitchell, died protecting Shannon and Kelly from drug-runner Benson Long's minions. Gibbs couldn't say no.

Inspired by Luis' strength, Gibbs decided to stop by his former home and to start tending to his old wounds.
