NCIS EP Charles Floyd Johnson was invited along with, George Lucas and the cast, to screen "Red Tails" for the President and the First Lady in their private screening room on Friday, January 13th. They also invited some of the original Tuskegee Airmen. "Red Tails" is playing now in theaters.

The interior of the diner needed to feel like Harmon's character, Jethro Gibbs -- retro, no frills, honest, clean. A family owned diner with good food and good people. A slice of Americana. Rob Bacon, our Production Designer, created it to perfection.

As far back as July of 2011, I was thinking about the 200th episode. It started with a single question, "Where does Gibbs get that cup of coffee in the morning? The one he always enters the squad room with." I immediately called Executive Producer Mark Horowitz and asked if he could find a diner to film in. Something we could put on the stage. Something really cool.

"Hot Fresh Coffee" -- the insignia we've seen on Gibbs' morning coffee cup for years. And here it is displayed on the wall of the diner. There are the cups waiting for him. This needed to look and feel like the place that every NCIS morning begins.

The exterior was really just one of our stages. Except when we put the whole diner on a flatbed truck and hauled it to downtown Los Angeles for scenes under the bridge. Then we later optically matted in the city of Washington DC in the background thanks to our very talented post-production team.
