He had a very difficult relationship with his father

Unfortunately, things didn't work out well between Deeks and his father (Gordon John Brandel), who was abusive and an alcoholic. When Deeks was just 11 years old, his father got drunk and pointed a shotgun at the boy and his mother. The young Deeks managed to get his hands on another gun and shot his dad in self-defense. Everybody survived, but the incident caused more than just physical wounds.
