He's a lawyer

Early in Season 2, it was revealed that Deeks worked as a public defender before joining the police force. His past profession came up again in Season 4 during a case involving a former client, Jenny, who tried to help Detective Deeks. A couple of episodes later, Kensi mentioned his career as a lawyer—joking that she couldn't picture him in a suit job.
He did a lot of undercover work for LAPD

Deeks has had various roles in law enforcement. In Season 2, Episode 2, "Black Widow," he revealed to Kensi that he worked for two years in the Robbery Division of LAPD. He also worked in the Vice Division and did plenty of undercover work before joining NCIS.
He's still close with his mom

He had a very difficult relationship with his father

Unfortunately, things didn't work out well between Deeks and his father (Gordon John Brandel), who was abusive and an alcoholic. When Deeks was just 11 years old, his father got drunk and pointed a shotgun at the boy and his mother. The young Deeks managed to get his hands on another gun and shot his dad in self-defense. Everybody survived, but the incident caused more than just physical wounds.

After getting hurt on the job, a hospitalized Deeks revealed to Kensi that his father was in prison before dying in a car accident in 1998.

In Season 2's "Plan B," Deeks' childhood friend Ray returns. It's revealed that Ray supplied the gun Deeks used to shoot his own father. Fast forward to current day, and Ray is now an informant for Deeks.

Also in "Plan B," Deeks resumes his old alias "Max Gentry" in order to protect Ray from a criminal group that wants him dead.

While working on a couple of cases, we got a glimpse into Deeks' childhood interests—including the violin and model trains. In "Patriot Acts" (Season 3, Episode 20), he was able to recognize the person of interest's expertise in the cello. In "The Livelong Day" (Season 5, Episode 7), he helped solve the case by recognizing a rare scale engine.

Deeks has referred to a crazy ex-girlfriend named Erin, who has "anger/jealousy/trust/more anger issues." During the course of an investigation in "Crimeleon" (Season 3, Episode 15), he runs into his knife-wielding ex while she's working as a bartender.

He's mentioned that the TV shows CHiPs and TJ Hooker led him to join the force.
He hates poodles

Deeks has a dog named Monty who was trained to sniff bombs, but he hates poodles after being bitten by one.
He loves surfing

Deeks is an avid surfer and beach lover. His favorite spots to catch waves in LA are Heavens, County, and Staircase.

Deeks' greatest fears? In "Wanted" (Season 4, Episode 17), he said they include headhunters, being buried up to his head in an anthill, and quicksand.
He was choked by a boa constrictor

Deeks was choked by a boa constrictor at his friend Darrel Donkins' 8th birthday party. Paramedics had to use the jaws of life to free him and the incident made the front page of the Encino Times. His mom keeps a laminated copy on the front of her fridge.
He's afraid of needles

Though he comes across as a tough guy, Deeks is deathly afraid of needles. When Hetty forces him to get a vaccine in "Touch of Death" (Season 3, Episode 21), Deeks can be heard screaming before passing out.
He didn't get along with his former partner

On "Internal Affairs" (Season 7, Episode 7), we finally found out Deeks was being investigated for the murder of his former partner, Francis Boyle. The pair never got along as Deeks felt Boyle's shady and even violent conduct crossed a line.
He was sending money to a strange woman

When Deeks was arrested, the NCIS team did their own investigation and found that he had been sending money to a woman named Tiffany. After initial suspicions due to Tiffany's past as a prostitute, it turned out that she had become an informant.
