Warning: SPOILERS from Episode 10, Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery follow...

In the fall finale of Star Trek: Discovery, viewers were stunned to find that the Discovery and her crew had been abruptly transported to unknown space.

But after the premiere of the latest episode, "Despite Yourself," we know that it wasn't our space at all, but a parallel universe—the Mirror Universe, to be precise.

Fans of classic Star Trek will recall that the Mirror Universe was first introduced in the original series episode "Mirror, Mirror," in which members of the Enterprise crew switched places with their evil (or, "mirror") counterparts from an alternate reality where brutalism reigns.

Now, in a new behind-the-scenes video, Executive Producer Akiva Goldsman provides further insight into Star Trek: Discovery's voyage to the Mirror Universe.

"'Mirror, Mirror' started this idea of taking a dark version of a character and putting them up on screen," he says. "The Mirror Universe is kind of a gift to our storytelling. I think it's a gift to all Star Trek storytelling, which is why it keeps recurring." Watch more above!

Goldsman continues, "It's also—and I think this gets, perhaps, overlooked sometimes—a delight for the actors, because you get to be a version of you that is 'other' than what you've been doing day in, day out."

Series star Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Michael Burnham on the show, couldn't agree more, adding, "The Mirror Universe is the complete antithesis to us, so that allows for some really juicy storytelling."
