Alicia and Cary's plans to leave Lockhart/Gardner are finally uncovered, and the fight for top clients begins. When Will got word of Alicia's plans, he marched straight in to her office to confront her about the betrayal. And, just like that, Alicia’s career with Lockhart/Gardner was over.
Season 5, Episode 5

Alicia is asked to write a keynote about how she got back into the working world after "opting out." Through flashbacks, we see how Alicia landed her job at Stern, Lockhart, and Gardner. It was only after numerous rejections that Will Gardner gave her a chance when no one else would. 
Season 5, Episode 14

After learning of Will's death, Alicia finds her way back to Lockhart/Gardner and falls into Diane’s arms, sobbing. Once alone, Alicia checks her phone and sees she has a voicemail—from Will. Unfortunately, the message left much to the imagination: "Alicia—Hold on, your honor—I'll call you back."

After days of mourning over Will's death, Alicia reappears and finds Peter in the kitchen, and the two of them go at each other. Peter and Alicia stood side-by-side onstage, cameras flashing, in a scene that mirrored the press conference that opened the entire series. But this time was different—it was Alicia's turn in the spotlight. Even though their marriage is on the rocks, they both realize how much they need each other.

When Diane calls Alicia to break the news about Cary’s release, Alicia screams in relief in a parking garage. She even sets off a car alarm. And while she stands there with a goofy grin on her face, Johnny Elfman comes up and asks her if she's alright. She marches over to him and kisses him.
Season 6, Episode 11

After resigning as State's Attorney, Alicia becomes convinced that Diane and Cary are trying to push her out of the firm—the firm she started. With no back-up plan, and the encouragement of Peter, she decides to start her own firm solo. With little-to-no communication, game-changing choices are made. It culminates in an argument between Alicia and Diane in which they each accuse the other of betrayal. (Of course, they would eventually reconcile.)
