As premiere week winds down, the hosts of The Talk continue to share deeply personal aspects of their lives.

On Thursday, Sara Gilbert decided to use the platform to share an emotional story about her father she never thought she would tell.

She explained that her father had been a very successful lawyer, but he fell on hard times after his divorce from Sara’s mother.

“I was 18 or 19 and making more money than any teenager should be making at the time,” the former Roseanne actress said. Sara’s father came to her for financial support, and although she felt uncomfortable, she helped him out a few times. But it certainly shifted the nature of their relationship.

“I just wanted him to be my dad,” Sara confessed, explaining that she decided to draw a boundary with her father by not agreeing to loan him any more money.

At the time, Sara felt that it was the healthy choice, but in retrospect, she realized how hard it must have been for a father to ask this of a child; how badly he must have needed it. Looking back, she realizes, “When it comes to your family, it’s better to give.”

Years later, Sara’s father became ill and the actress willingly became his primary caregiver. She regrets her former choices, specifically refusing financial help, but ultimately knows how much he loved her.

“My mom texted me before [the show today] and said ‘you were a wonderful daughter to him’ and that means a lot to me.”
