"The Imperfect Environmentalist: A Practical Guide to Clear Your Body, Detox Your Home, and Save the Earth (Without Losing Your Mind)," is Sara's simple approach to clean out the pollutants in our lives. Sara led our hosts in creating eco-friendly homemade gifts that are beautiful, inexpensive, and -- most importantly -- healthier for our health and the environment.

Dishwasher Detergent

  • 1 cup borax

  • 1 cup washing soda (or baking soda will work, as well)

  • 1/2 cup citric acid

  • 1/2 cup of kosher salt as a scrubbing agent

Pour all ingredients into an airtight container. Mix gently. Use about 1 tablespoon per wash. Use can use white vinegar as a rinsing agent.

Laundry Soap  (Powder)

  • 1 bar of natural soap

  • 1 cup borax

  • 1 cup washing soda (or baking soda)

Shave the bar of soap using a hand grater. (You can also use a food processor.) Add the borax and washing soda and stir. Use 1 tbsp for light loads or 2 tbsp for heavy loads.

NOTE: Instead of grating, you can also microwave the bar of soap in a bag until it is dry and crumbles on its own.

Laundry Soap  (Liquid)

  • 3 tablespoons borax

  • 3 tablespoons washing soda

  • 3 tablespoons natural liquid castile soap

Pour ingredients into an old laundry detergent jug (or other large container).  Add 4 cups boiling water and shake.  Then fill to top with cold water (careful, it will bubble and be runny). Use ½ to 1 cup per load (depending on how soiled your laundry is).

All-Purpose Cleaner

  • 2 cups warm water

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar

  • 5-10 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

In a bowl, stir the baking soda into the water until it's completely dissolved. Add the remaining ingredients in order. Transfer to a spray bottle using a funnel. Shake gently before each use.

NOTE: By dissolving baking soda and water first, you won't get the bubby fizz when adding the vinegar. (For TV, might be more fun to add baking soda and vinegar together first.)

Whipped Coconut Oil Body Butter

  • 1 cup coconut oil

  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil

  • few drops of your favorite essential oils for fragrance (optional)

Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl. (Note: Do not melt the coconut oil first. It will only whip up if it's solid.)

Mix on high speed with a wire whisk for 6-7 minutes or until whipped into a light, airy consistency. Spoon the mixture into a glass jar and cover tightly. Store at room temperature, or in the refrigerator if your house is warm.

Eye Makeup Remover

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 ½  tablespoons natural tear-free baby shampoo

  • 1/8 teaspoon Coconut oil or Olive oil

Combine ingredients in a bowl. Funnel into small containers. Shake gently before use.

Vanilla Lavender Relaxing Facial Scrub

  • 1 cup organic white sugar

  • ½ cup almond oil

  • ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil

  • ½ teaspoon real vanilla extract

  • 15 drops lavender essential oil

Combine ingredients. This will last on the counter for up to 2 months.
