MORE AIRPORT WOES FOIL JOE & BILL
An emotional tribute to the millions of lives lost at Auschwitz became the centerpiece of the Teams' two-leg journey through Poland. In Krakow, Oswald & Danny and Uchenna & Joyce moved into first place together because of an Intersection, while life partners Joe & Bill couldn't overcome their thirty-minute penalty and became the sixth Team eliminated from the Race.
AN EARLY LEAD
Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 4:20am, cousins Charla & Mirna discovered they needed to fly over 5,000 miles to Warsaw, Poland and make their way to Czapski Palace, Frederic Chopin's childhood home. Since flights to Warsaw were limited, Teams were provided with tickets on a flight that would arrive at 11:25am the next day. However, they were under no obligation to use the tickets.
Charla & Mirna, best friends Oswald & Danny, and beauty queens Dustin & Kandice all congregated at the travel agency waiting for the agency's 8:30am opening while married couple Uchenna & Joyce opted to camp out at a South African Airways office that also opened at 8:30am. As they waited, Uchenna & Joyce tried calling the travel agency that just opened its doors with the other three Teams present; however the Teams quickly put an end to the phone call over Uchenna's pleas for assistance.
Two agents assisted Teams in the travel agency as they searched for better flights than the one provided to them. While cousins Charla & Mirna monopolized one agent with co-conspirators Oswald & Danny, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice had another to themselves. The beauty queens bested the other two Teams by snagging the last two tickets on a flight connecting through Addis Ababa and Frankfurt landing at 9:10am. At South African Airways, Uchenna & Joyce booked the same connection through Frankfurt landing in Warsaw at 9:10am, but the couple needed to pick up the tickets at the Frankfurt Airport to make the flight. Oswald & Danny and Charla & Mirna eventually found a flight through Amsterdam landing in Warsaw at 9:45am while the Guidos and Eric & Danielle settled for the tickets provided to remain in last place together.
WAY BEHIND... AGAIN
Landing in Kilamanjaro, Tanzania, Eric & Danielle and Joe & Bill tried to pick up tickets for their connecting flights to Amsterdam and Warsaw, but an agent told them they were too late to board the flight. Faced with the nightmare of once again being over 12 hours behind, the two Teams begged and pleaded as the plane stood on the tarmac waiting to fly away without them. In a fit of panic and rage after being denied entry, Joe ran out to the tarmac shouting for the plane and ringing a bell as Bill wisely noted, "I think he's lost it." When they calmed down, the two Teams made a gentleman's agreement to meet the next morning and book the same 6:30am flight to Warsaw choosing to battle each other in Poland instead of the airport.
In Frankfurt, married couple Uchenna & Joyce had problems of their own as they missed their connecting flight to Warsaw because they couldn't pick up their tickets in time. This meant Dustin & Kandice pulled ahead as the only Team on the flight to Warsaw landing at 9:10am.
ALONE IN FIRST
Touching down at 9:07am, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice arrived at Czapski Palace to find a Detour having to choose between Perfect Pitch and Perfect Angle. In Perfect Pitch, Teams had to make their way three-quarters of a mile to the Prymas Palace and choose a grand piano. Then, they needed to use the provided tools to tune one key of the keyboard. Once the concert pianist played a piece of Chopin's music and determined that their piano was in tune, he would hand them their next clue. In Perfect Angle, Teams made their way approximately half a mile to the Escada Boutique to pick up a mannequin and carry it another 400 yards to the Panoramik Laboratory. Once there, Teams had to use an x-ray machine to locate a clue imbedded somewhere inside their mannequin which needed to be positioned at a very specific angle for the image to capture the name of their next destination.
Having played piano since age six, Dustin felt confident in her ability to tune a piano. On the task, Dustin commented, "For each key that you push, there's actually three strings that connect to it, so is it the right one, is it the left one, or is it the middle? And which way based on that you turn the tool." The beauty queens proved very adept at tuning the off-key note and received their next clue instructing them to travel to Jan III Sobieski Lazienki, a monument honoring a king of Poland.
Arriving at the monument in first place, beauty queens Dustin & Kandice opened their next clue instructing them to search the palace grounds for the next Pit Stop. After the beauty queens stepped on the mat in first place, Phil informed the excited duo they had won a trip for two from Travelocity to Puerto Rico. |
