Walter Cronkite hosts this special celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center Honors. Actor James Earl Jones, conductor James Levine, dancer/actress Chita Rivera, singer/songwriter Paul Simon and actress Elizabeth Taylor will receive honors for the year 2002. They were saluted by President George W. Bush, first lady Laura Bush, as well as artists from around the world at a gala performance in the Kennedy Center's Opera House on December 8.
Each year, the Honors recipients are selected by the Board of Trustees of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The recipients are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts: whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures or television. The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence. The Honors are not designated by art form or category of artistic achievement; the selection process, over the years, has produced balance among the various arts and artistic disciplines.
Members of the Kennedy Center's National Artists Committee, as well as past Honorees, make recommendations of possible Honorees.
