Alois Hitler, Adolf's father, was born in June 1837. Adolf's mother, Klara, was Alois's second wife. Alois and Klara were second cousins, and Alois was 23 years his young wife's senior. Because of their generational difference, and out of a sense of familiar respect, Klara referred to Alois as "Uncle." Adolf's two older half-siblings, Alois Jr. and Angela, were the product of Alois's previous marriage. A customs officer, charged with overseeing goods crossing the border between Austria and Germany and a stern and unforgiving father, Alois wanted his son also to pursue a career in the Austro-Hungarian Empire's civil service. However, at a young age, Adolf was already enamored with Germany, and he and his father disagreed over his ambitions. Alois died in 1903 when Hitler was about 14 years old.
