 Christina Souza & Ugochi Nwaogwugwu
The first performer in the Adult Singer category was Christina Souza, who sang "I Will Survive." "Great voice, a lot of energy, but a little too much styling for me," said Ben Stein, as he gave her 3 stars. "Easy!" advised Chaka Khan, who gave her 2 stars. Carol Leifer gave Christina 3 stars, remarking, "She has a great energy on stage and really fun presence in the room, but it was a little one-note." "Be careful about your pitch," advised Naomi Judd, who gave her 3 stars, "Please pick another song; I want to hear you shine. You're definitely a Technicolor person, and you will survive."
Second up was Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, who sang "Neither One of Us." Ben Stein gave her 4 stars, adding, "Super talent, super voice, super pipes, but the outfit distracted from your incredibly great performance." "You're enormously talented," remarked Carol Leifer, who gave her 4 stars, "I'd really like to see you go on to big things just to make DJs have to pronounce your name." Chaka Khan gave Ugochi 4 stars, saying, "You have beautiful presence. You have a lovely voice. You just need to relax and work more." Naomi Judd gave her 5 stars, telling her, "Music expresses emotions words can't define. You touched me."
After the judges’ scoring, Ugochi led with 17 stars. The home audience disagreed, scoring Christina higher by one star. This wasn’t enough to change the outcome, and Ugochi won the category and will advance to next Thursday’s Semifinals. |
