Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, Nikki Kimbrough & Spencer Day
The first Adult Singer tonight was Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, who perfomed "Do Right." Commenting on Ugochi's melismatic voice, Tyrese told her "Runs don't make a song" and gave her 3 stars. Nodding, Naomi Judd added that next time she'd like to see Ugochi "sink down in it," and gave her 3 stars. "Definitely going to be a star, not quite there yet," agreed Ben Stein, also giving her 3 stars. Carol Leifer gave Ugochi another 3 stars, adding, "Keep working. You have so much potential."
Nikki Kimbrough, tonight's second Adult Singer, performed "Home." Commenting that Nikki "reminds me of someone I would see on Broadway," Tyrese gave her 3 stars. "You're almost there," Naomi Judd told Nikki, giving her 4 stars. "Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up," said Ben Stein, and gave Nikki 4 stars. Carol Leifer also gave Nikki 4 stars, adding, "She takes over this whole room. Great presence."
Last but not least was Spencer Day, who sang "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and accompanied himself on the piano. "I respect anybody who can play an instrument and sing," Tyrese told him, and gave him 4 stars. "Great piano man," agreed Naomi Judd, who gave Spencer 3 stars. Calling Spencer's performance "way, way overstyled for the song," Ben Stein gave him 3 stars. Expressing regret because she "preferred Nikki tonight," Carol Leifer also gave Spencer 3 stars.
The judges favored Nikki, but the home audience upset their decision, making Spencer winner of the category with 29 stars. Spencer Day won the Semifinal round for Adult Singer and will advance to the Finals on Thursday, February 6.
