"I thought I was prepared for SURVIVOR, but man, did I think wrong. What I wasn't prepared for was the loneliness and isolation of being stuck in the middle of Africa and Panama with no friends, no family, no couches." That's how All-Star Ethan Zohn, Sole Survivor of AFRICA, describes his experiences on location. "When I returned, it was like a breath of fresh air: relaxation, comfort. I got to relax and joke and sleep and truly enjoy it without any consequences."

These days, Ethan lives happily in what he calls "the concrete jungle known as Manhattan" and keeps busy with a number of projects, including soccer and charity work: "I used a portion of my winnings from SURVIVOR: AFRICA to help create a non-profit organization called Grassroot Soccer. We train professional soccer players in Africa to teach kids about HIV/AIDS. We will graduate over 1,000,000 kids by the end of 2007. I'm also the national spokesperson for America Scores, an after school program for inner city kids that combines creative writing with soccer." As if that weren't enough, Ethan also works with the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation (CRPF) to spread the word about the importance of colorectal cancer screening: "Our campaign, Make Screening a Reality, is an educational program specifically designed to encourage young people to remind their parents and other loved ones aged 50 and older to get screened for colorectal cancer."

Charity work isn't the only thing that occupies Ethan's time. "I'm the host of my own television show called 'The Metro Soccer Report' on Madison Square Garden Network." In addition, he works as a sideline reporter and analyst for soccer games around the world. He has had numerous motivational speaking engagements for college, high school, corporate and sports audiences. In 2005, he was voted Rookie Speaker of the Year. He also appears in "The Scorned," the film written by Rob Cesternino.

When he's not working (yes, he does take time off), Ethan likes to hang out with girlfriend Jenna Morasca, play with his nieces and nephews, see movies, travel and (surprise!) play soccer. He also competes in events like Eco Challenge and other adventure races. He keeps in touch with several other Survivors, including Lex, Big Tom, Tina, Kim J, Rob C, Jonny Fairplay, Jenna Lewis, Mitchell and, of course, Jenna M.

Having won Survivor has brought Ethan into the public eye, but he has no trouble keeping things in perspective. "Celebrity is a bit ridiculous," he asserts, "but it's currency, and I'm spending mine on changing the way people think about the world. You've got to use what you've got. Celebrity has an expiration date; you are the flavor of the month. I have a great family, girlfriend and friends that keep me grounded and level-headed. Get in, have fun, maximize your time in the spotlight, and when it's over, it's over. I'm totally OK with that."
