Miracle on 34th Street
The final three designers meet Mr. Hilfiger at Macy’s Herald Square, the world’s largest department store. Mr. Hilfiger assures them that they’ve all impressed him quite a bit. Unfortunately, he can only choose one winner. “This is where I launched my collection twenty years ago when it was just menswear,” he says. “And then I built my collection into a lifestyle brand. This is really where it all happens for a designer. This is where the customer connects with the product. Now I’m going to give you the opportunity to put your product in front of thousands of customers.”
Each of the designers will get a window on 34th Street, which they will dress and unveil their own lifestyle brand, a collection of products that encompass all aspects of a customer’s daily life. This is a huge opportunity because 7,000 people pass by these windows per hour. “It can be clothing, perfume, handbags, shoes, bedding…anything you want, but it should be all tied together by a common theme or style,” explains Mr. Hilfiger, “the style that the winner will be bringing to my company.”
