HELLO…AND GOODBYE!

Last week on CUPID, America's voice was heard for the first time, with the dating lives of one of Lisa Shannon's 10 Suitors on the line. Ken and Rob were picked out as the two Suitors who received the lowest amount of viewer votes, but ultimately it was Rob who left with a broken arrow and, judging from the expression on his face, a broken heart as well. That left nine guys to continue battling it out for the hand of Lisa Shannon, the girl who comes with a million-dollar dowry, provided she and the last guy standing get hitched, and stay hitched, for at least one year.

Last week's second dates went better for some than others; Evan, Dominic and Hank found the waters relatively calm, while Renda, Scott and Robert faced choppier seas, especially when it came time to face the withering critiques of Lisa's two cutthroat friends, Laura and Kimberly. On tonight's show, one more Suitor would be eliminated, leaving the remaining eight to take Lisa on their third round of dates.

But the dates would wait, at least until we'd seen the impact Rob's exit had had on the nine guys who'd escaped with their love lives…for now. After bringing the guys, Lisa, and Laura and Kimberly onto the stage amid loud applause from the studio audience, Brian offered them--and the audience--a glimpse of the bachelor house in the wake of Rob's departure. Dominic described the mood in the house as "a little more quiet" when they all returned to the house and realized it was a little emptier with Rob gone. He went on to say he thought Robert A. should've been the one to get tossed. Robert admitted being very relieved to see Rob go, since he'd obviously felt his head on the chopping block. Ken also felt lucky to still be standing: "I should've been the one voted off, not him." But Joe put Rob's exit in perspective, candidly confessing, "He's [Rob's] one less guy for me to worry about." Hank agreed, saying he'd seen the show as a competition from day one. But Renda may have summed up everyone's feelings best when he said, "What sucks is we gotta do this again to someone else."

TWO DOWN, EIGHT TO GO
The grim testimony over, it was time once again to reveal which of the guys would be going home this week--empty-handed and broken-hearted. With the Suitors nervously clutching their CUPID arrows on stage, Brian asked the three guys who'd polled the lowest total of votes to step forward: Ken, Renda, and Scott. Next, Brian informed Ken, who joked that he was becoming a regular on the firing line, and Renda that they were safe, for one more week at least.

This meant that Scott's time had finally run out on CUPID. Before leaving, Scott, his face downcast but accepting, told Lisa that he might have some regrets about their second date, but added, "One thing I don't regret is coming all the way to California to meet someone as special and extraordinary as you are." Lisa let him know that she'd had a great time with him as well: "It was great getting to know you. Definitely, after this, you've got a friend."

And then there were eight.

With everyone still in a state of semi-shock, Brian announced the format for this week's dates, designed to allow Lisa the opportunity to see the guys with their guard down and their eyelids drooping. First, the Suitors were all deprived of an entire day's worth of sleep. They were then given $1000 each to buy Lisa an outfit--without having any clue what sizes she wore--and take her somewhere appropriate in her new clothes. Simple enough, unless you're trying to get by on NO SLEEP in the last 30-plus hours.

KEN'S DATE: IN THE PINK
First up was Ken, the equity trader from Chicago, who claimed he'd shopped successfully for women before, "but never after 36 hours of sleep deprivation." And after picking out a pink bra (which he told the saleswoman he was never going to see) to go along with the skimpy black dress he'd selected, Ken wasn't exactly exuding confidence as he prepared for his date: "I hope I have enough energy left for this whole thing."

For her part, Lisa looked slightly unsure when she first tried on the striking outfit, but she and Ken both cracked up (along with a highly amused studio audience) when she showed up at the swanky restaurant where he'd made their reservations. Clearly, something had to go or they'd be laughing all through dinner, and Lisa knew exactly what it was. After excusing herself from the table, she returned to the table with the pink bra in her hands, leaving Ken nearly breathless in appreciation of how good his outfit now looked on her. After Ken insisted she keep the bra, the two then discussed their similar tastes in restaurants and food while polishing off desert. But Lisa's mind was still on her outfit at the end of the date, as she gazed down at her cleavage and quipped, "I'm glad I got to see the dress in its full splendor." Ken was quick to respond, "I know. Me too!"

As the post-date analysis kicked off, Laura clearly shocked Ken when she gave him, and his date with Lisa, a definite thumbs-up: "You do way better when you're tired, 'cause you're not trying so hard. You should pull all-nighters more often!" Kimberly clearly agreed, telling the dumbfounded Ken, "You have a personality. It took you a few weeks, America gave you the chance, but you came through!"

Ken was stunned and hardly knew how to respond, laughing and shaking his head: "I can't believe it." Lisa was obviously happy that her friends had responded so favorably, and gave Ken her own big thumbs-up: "Thank God you dodged another bullet this week!"

EVAN'S DATE: IF IT STICKS OUT, IT'S FINE
Evan, the girls volleyball coach from Huntington Beach, looked like he was sleep-walking as he headed into a woman's clothing store to pick out an outfit for Lisa. Showing the effects of his lack of sleep, Evan admonished the saleswomen for leading him to a rack of men's pants before realizing the store sold only women's clothes. Things got sillier from there as he decided to slip on a pair of panties over his own pants, a sight that had the audience hooting as they watched. Somehow, Evan finally settled on an outfit, throwing up his hands and telling the saleswoman, "If the bra sticks out, it's fine."

He took Lisa to a surf-themed restaurant, where the two of them couldn't help but giggle at the way Evan's hand-picked outfit looked with the bra sticking out. Lisa didn't seem to mind, though, expressing an appreciation for Evan's corny humor: "You're very funny--in a way that most people probably can't find funny." When she asked him his idea of his ideal girl, he got a big laugh when he responded, "Her name has to rhyme with 'Schmisa'." The date ended with the two of them slow-dancing in the parking lot, with Evan pulling up the collar of his shirt and laying an "Elvis kiss" on her.

Laura acknowledged that there was an obvious attraction between Lisa and Evan, but remained skeptical about his potential as marriage material: "I thought you were seriously gonna stop breathing when you were talking about settling down and getting serious." The audience's hooting made clear they didn't agree with Laura's assessment. Nor did Kimberly, who told Evan that she liked him when he was tired: "You came across a lot less like a 'player.' I think there's hope for you, Evan."

Evan thanked Kimberly for the unexpected kind words, then turned to Lisa and told her he loved hanging out with her: "You laugh at my horrible corny jokes. No one else does. I love hanging out with you." Lisa also disagreed with Laura, saying she thought Evan was "really ready to get married if the right girl comes along. Which, hopefully, I am."

DOMINIC'S DATE: REST FOR THE WEARY
Perhaps inspired by his recent bout with sleep deprivation, Dominic went shopping for pajamas for Lisa. The recent college graduate and professional bartender had a cozy date planned for himself and Lisa, and he obviously wanted her to be at her most comfortable. He seemed almost giddy waving a pair of tiny pajama bottoms, while sighing goofily, "Extra small for an extra special girl!"

When Lisa showed up at the hotel Dominc had booked for the two of them wearing the tight-fitting clothes, he was clearly pleased with how she looked, and vice versa. And when he saw the bed in their room, his reaction was even stronger: "That thing looks great. I just want to dive in it!" Sure enough, after hanging out in the room for a couple of hours, enjoying room service and the incredible view from the balcony, the two of them "let loose" as Dominic put it, and ended up rolling around playfully on the plush bed in each other's arms.

As in previous weeks, Laura made it clear that Dominic's age was still an issue with her: "Honey, I thought I was at prom again." But she also made it clear she was still impressed with Dominic: "You were up all night and you were still ready to go. Like that!" Kimberly appreciated the casual outfit Dominic picked out for Lisa, but thought he might be trying too hard to get her into the bedroom. "Last week you got her drunk. This week you brought her to a hotel room? On a third date that would freak me out a little bit."

Dominic defended himself, claiming he wasn't trying to get Lisa into bed; he just wanted to take her to a place where they could "hang out and chill, like we were boyfriend and girlfriend." Lisa began with a sharp comment aimed at Laura: "Joke's over. Get over the age thing; we already let him through." She then praised Dominic for realizing, "I just wanted to hang out after this whole weird experience."

PAUL'S DATE: THE ELIMINATION GAME
Paul, the playwright and professor from New York, seemed more than a little tired as he wandered through the clothing store sifting through bustiers, panties, size 0 skirts, in search of something, anything, for Lisa to wear. Despite his cloudy state of mind, however, Paul did have a clear agenda: "Lisa's got amazing legs. I think she should show them off."

And show them off she did, in a mini-skirt that left little to America's, or Paul's imagination. Lisa was clearly pleased with Paul's work, telling him, "You did an amazing job. Everything fits to a 'T'." Paul's own assessment could be boiled down to one word as he longingly took in her appearance: "Ravishing!" The two ordered their meal through a process Lisa called "The Elimination Game," which immediately got her in trouble with Paul when she crossed off a dish with prosciutto, one of his favorite foods. The date looked like a happy one, however, as Lisa told him point blank, "I like you a lot." As for Paul, he clearly felt the same way: "I am definitely falling. Something's happening. I don't know what to call it yet. But something's happening."

Something may have been happening for Paul, but Laura remained suspicious of his motives, despite the fact that she liked him: "Hell, I even think you're sexy. But I don't believe that you're here for the right reasons." Kimberly was also unsure about Paul, but for a different reason--she just didn't feel the chemistry happening between him and Lisa: "I don't feel it happening as naturally with you as I do with, say, Dominic or Hank, or even Evan, if you can believe that."

Paul responded to Laura by saying, "If I wanted to promote my career, I'd go promote it. I'm here for Lisa. I'm having a great time getting to know a really special lady." Lisa started off by making her feelings for Paul clear: "If I was playing the Elimination Game, I'd definitely keep you." She then raised some fur on the set when she added, "I don't care what Laura says; I'm having a ball." To which Laura shot back, "Then why am I here?!"
